In a citywide celebration of cleanliness, Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) honored societies, schools, hospitals, hotels, and markets that demonstrated exceptional efforts in maintaining hygiene and sanitation under the “Super Swachh League” of Swachh Survekshan 2024. The award ceremony, held at the NMMC headquarters’ Gyan Kendra, brought together civic leaders and citizens in a bid to strengthen the city’s position as a national clean city leader.
Navi Mumbai was recently ranked under the elite ‘Super Swachh League’ category, outperforming other major cities in cleanliness rankings. To build on this momentum, NMMC conducted a city-wide ‘Division-Level Swachhata Competition’ in categories like Clean Societies, Clean Schools/Colleges, Clean Hospitals, Clean Hotels, and Clean Government Offices.
Institutions that excelled in cleanliness were felicitated by Additional Municipal Commissioner Sunil Pawar, Solid Waste Management Deputy Commissioners Dr. Ajay Gadade and Smita Kale, along with top civic officers. Recipients received trophies, certificates, and cash prizes, which the corporation encouraged them to reinvest in their internal hygiene practices.

- Cleanest Market: Shramik Janata Market, Koparkhairane
- Cleanest Hotel: Hotel Vivanta, Nerul
- Cleanest Hospital: Dr. D.Y. Patil Hospital, Nerul
- Cleanest Government Office: NMMC Fire Brigade Station, Vashi
Addressing the gathering, Additional Commissioner Sunil Pawar praised citizens and sanitation workers for their dedicated efforts and emphasized the need to maintain this momentum to retain Navi Mumbai’s top rank with 85%+ scores. “This is not just about awards, but a mindset shift. Let’s walk in the footsteps of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and build a city that can be a global cleanliness model,” he said.
In a move towards sustainable waste management, NMMC also launched innovative initiatives:
- Cloth Recycling Center at Belapur: India’s first municipal-backed facility where unused household clothes from 260 societies are turned into decorative and reusable items.
- Plastic & E-Waste Recyclothon, in collaboration with Project Navi Mumbai, aims to upcycle waste into benches, pens, compass boxes, and more.
Deputy Commissioner Smita Kale noted that the Super Swachh ranking was a result of collective effort and called for more community participation in future campaigns. Rohit Fadtare, who leads the plastic and e-waste project, outlined how waste is being creatively reused and reimagined.
Citizens are being urged to take ownership of their surroundings. “My City, My Responsibility” is not just a slogan – it’s a call for action. NMMC has been aggressively promoting waste segregation even in slums and gaothans, reaching deep into the community to ensure every street and home is part of the cleanliness movement.
As NMMC pushes toward an international-level cleanliness benchmark, this award function wasn’t just a celebration, but a strong message — Cleanliness is a shared civic pride.
