The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has begun extensive preparations for Swachh Survekshan 2025-26, aiming to strengthen the city’s standing among India’s cleanest urban centres and retain its position in the prestigious ‘Super Swachh League’ category.
Navi Mumbai has built a strong reputation in recent years by consistently ranking among the top three cleanest cities in India. Recognising the sustained performance of such cities, the Swachh Survekshan 2024 introduced a special category called ‘Super Swachh League’, where Navi Mumbai has secured a place. Maintaining this elite ranking is now a major responsibility for the civic body.
To ensure effective planning, a detailed review meeting was held under the guidance of Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde, where Additional Commissioner Sunil Pawar reviewed the strategy and action plan required for the upcoming survey.
Senior officials including City Engineer Shirish Aradwad, Deputy Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) Dr Ajay Gadde, Deputy Commissioner (Division 1) Somnath Potre, Additional City Engineer Arvind Shinde, along with assistant commissioners, department heads and executive engineers were present at the meeting.
The civic administration reviewed the toolkit issued by the Central Government under the Swachh Bharat Mission. The upcoming survey will have a total score of 12,500 marks, with the largest weightage given to ground-level inspection and citizen feedback, which together account for 10,500 marks. This includes 1,500 marks for physical cleanliness assessment and 1,000 marks for citizen feedback and grievance redressal systems.
As part of the preparation, the NMMC will focus on several critical areas mentioned in the city profile, including busy markets, commercial zones, high-footfall public areas, slum clusters, gaothan areas, back lanes, public and community toilets, water bodies, natural drains, and garbage-generating housing societies and institutions.
The corporation will also emphasise 3R centres (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), innovative waste management practices, air pollution control measures, proper disposal of construction and demolition waste, installation of public dustbins, and beautification of public spaces through wall paintings and sculptures.
A key highlight of this year’s survey will be promoting cleanliness habits in educational institutions. The civic body also plans to strengthen environmental institutions and expand awareness campaigns encouraging residents to actively participate through the Swachhata App and citizen feedback systems.
Under the ‘Swachh City Pair’ initiative, the NMMC will mentor other towns including Lonar and Malkapur municipal councils, as well as Kej, Kannad, and Jintur nagar panchayats. A delegation of NMMC officials has already visited these cities to review their sanitation systems and suggest improvements. The corporation is also considering organising a two-day workshop to guide these towns on improving cleanliness standards.
With preparations gaining momentum, the NMMC has urged citizens to actively participate in cleanliness initiatives and help the city strengthen its reputation as one of the cleanest cities in India during Swachh Survekshan 2025-26.
