In a significant step towards tightening food safety regulations, the Gujarat Food and Drugs Control Administration (FDCA), under the Health and Family Welfare Department, has issued a public notification seeking objections and suggestions on proposed amendments to the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.

Published on July 21, 2025, the notification outlines draft changes specifically targeting penal provisions to strengthen deterrence and enable stricter enforcement of food safety violations across the state.

Citizens, industry representatives, food business operators, and institutions have been invited to review the draft and share their feedback within 30 days of publication. The proposed amendments are available on the Gujarat Health Department’s official portal.

Dr. Hemant Koshia, Commissioner of FDCA Gujarat, said, “We aim to make food safety laws not just stricter but also practically enforceable. Public participation is essential for transparent and effective policymaking.”

The suggested revisions primarily focus on penalty structures to ensure more effective compliance and reduce recurring offenses in the food industry. Public suggestions can be submitted online via https://gujhealth.gujarat.gov.in/citizen-corner.htm or by scanning the QR code provided in the government’s notice.

This move underscores the Gujarat Government’s commitment to public health and participatory governance, allowing stakeholders to help shape the future of food regulation in the state.
