The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) is set to launch an intensified campaign to recover pending property tax dues, which remain one of the largest sources of revenue for the civic body.
Property tax forms the backbone of the municipal corporation’s finances and enables it to provide quality civic services and infrastructure facilities to residents. Compared to other major cities in India and Maharashtra, the property tax rates in Navi Mumbai are among the lowest, making timely payment by citizens essential for sustaining the city’s development.
Despite continuous awareness campaigns through various platforms, the number of property tax defaulters remains significant, prompting the civic administration to accelerate recovery efforts.
According to NMMC officials, Rs 665 crore has been collected as property tax so far in the financial year 2025-26. With the financial year ending on March 31, Municipal Commissioner Dr Kailas Shinde recently convened a special review meeting and directed officials to speed up tax recovery.
The meeting was attended by Additional Commissioner Sunil Pawar, Deputy Commissioner (Property Tax) Dr Amol Palve, assistant commissioners from various departments, and officials involved in property tax collection.
During the meeting, the commissioner reviewed the tax collection performance of all eight ward offices and assigned specific recovery targets to each division to ensure maximum collection before the financial year closes.
Dr Shinde also instructed officials to spend more time in the field rather than remaining in offices and to make direct contact with defaulters to recover pending dues.
The civic administration has also prepared a division-wise list of property tax defaulters arranged in descending order of pending dues. This list has been circulated to all ward offices, with clear instructions to take strict action against high-value defaulters.
Officials have been directed to intensify enforcement measures and initiate property attachment proceedings against those who continue to ignore payment notices.
The commissioner further instructed that the list of major defaulters be publicised through various media platforms to encourage compliance.
Appealing to citizens, Dr Kailas Shinde urged property owners to pay their property tax and outstanding dues promptly, emphasising that these contributions play a crucial role in the development and maintenance of Navi Mumbai’s civic infrastructure.
