Maharashtra’s higher education landscape entered a transformative phase with the grand inauguration of Pillai University in Navi Mumbai, established under Act No. 45 of 2025 and formally granted statutory status by the Maharashtra Legislature.
The much-anticipated inauguration ceremony took place at the Dr. K. M. Vasudevan Pillai Campus, New Panvel, in the presence of senior government leaders, policymakers, and distinguished academicians.
Chandrakant Patil Leads Historic Inauguration Ceremony
The ceremony was graced by Chandrakant Dada Patil, Minister for Higher & Technical Education, Government of Maharashtra, as the Chief Guest.
Prominent dignitaries present included MLAs Prashant Ramsheth Thakur, Vikrant Patil, along with B. Venugopal Reddy, IAS (Additional Chief Secretary, Higher & Technical Education Department) and Mangesh Pandurang Chitale, Municipal Commissioner, Panvel Municipal Corporation.
The formal programme began at 5 PM with the traditional lighting of the ceremonial lamp, followed by keynote addresses, unveiling of commemorative plaques, and the official declaration of Pillai University. The swearing-in ceremony of the President and Executive President marked another significant milestone.
Earlier, dignitaries toured state-of-the-art laboratories, research centres, and student innovation exhibitions showcasing cutting-edge work in Artificial Intelligence, drones, medical devices, cyber security, and urban planning.

Promoted by the Mahatma Education Society (MES), Pillai University becomes Maharashtra’s first State Private University in Navi Mumbai, reinforcing the region’s position as an emerging education hub.

From 20 Students to 30,000 Learners: The MES Journey
Founded in 1970 by Dr. K. M. Vasudevan Pillai and Dr. Daphne Pillai, the Mahatma Education Society began with just 20 students in Chembur. Today, it runs:
- 48 institutions
- 13 higher educational colleges (NAAC accredited)
- 10 schools
- Over 30,000 students
- 3,000+ faculty and staff
Its engineering college holds a NIRF Innovation Ranking (Band B 151–300), and MES has the highest number of PhD seats under the University of Mumbai across multiple disciplines.
