In a visionary move towards sustainable and inclusive transportation, the City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO) is preparing a Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP) for Navi Mumbai and the Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area (NAINA). The plan envisions a future-ready urban mobility system extending up to 2054.
CIDCO’s CMP will address existing and future transportation challenges by integrating all modes of transport — public, private, and non-motorized — while prioritizing eco-friendly solutions, traffic decongestion, and road safety.
“With mega-projects like NMIA, Corporate Park, Aerocity, and Logistics Hub coming up, Navi Mumbai will witness a surge in traffic. The CMP will act as a strategic guide for developing an inclusive and resilient mobility network,” said Vijay Singhal, VC & MD, CIDCO.
Navi Mumbai currently features an extensive transport setup including:
- Arterial routes like Thane-Belapur Road, Palm Beach Road, Sion-Panvel Highway, and Atal Setu
- 980+ km of internal and regional roads
- Over 60 km of railway connectivity
- The Belapur–Pendhar Metro Line
- Bus services operated by NMMC, MSRTC, and BEST
With additional projects such as Metro Line 8 (connecting NMIA to Mumbai Airport), Panvel–Karjat suburban rail, and Belapur-NMIA Metro extension on the horizon, the CMP is expected to bridge the gap between infrastructure expansion and mobility efficiency.
The CMP is not just an aspirational roadmap but also a mandatory requirement to access central funds for metro and public transport projects under the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
The plan will:
- Identify critical gaps in connectivity
- Prioritize high-impact infrastructure investments
- Offer a phased action plan till 2054
- Align with the Comprehensive Transport Study of MMR
- Emphasize non-motorized transport and social equity
CIDCO’s approach adheres to the National Urban Transport Policy, emphasizing low-emission travel, pedestrian-friendly roads, cycle lanes, and integrated traffic management systems.
As Navi Mumbai prepares for rapid urban and industrial transformation, CIDCO’s CMP promises to be the defining strategy that not only supports mobility needs but also drives the city’s sustainable future.
